And first as blanks and again after the application of the colored glaze. All this is done by hand. And so no two Zellige tiles are exactly alike.
It is precisely the small irregularities and bubbles in the glaze that make the incidence of light unique. Sometimes a tile shimmers like silk, sometimes like mother-of-pearl, sometimes almost like metal. Iridescent colors create a vibrancy that industrially produced plain tiles can never have. And: Cellular tiles can be laid without joints thanks to a sophisticated cutting technique. The tiles are cut at an angle, leaving a later invisible recess for the adhesive mortar.
